Swimming is a fantastic, total body yet low impact exercise you can enjoy while you are pregnant. The benefits of swimming include increased stamina, better overall cardiovascular health, and swimming regularly can help you to avoid gaining too much weight during your pregnancy. Once you speak with your doctor and get the OK to begin an exercise program that includes swimming, perhaps the biggest obstacle that remains is finding a comfortable pregnancy swimsuit. It can be a bit difficult to find a maternity bathing suit that fits well, provides enough support, and looks good since not a whole lot of companies produce swimwear for pregnant women. Swimsuits are for the most part seasonal items and pregnant women make up a demographic that has traditionally been underserved, so you might not find swimwear in every maternity shop you enter even in the middle of the Summer. That being said, it is not impossible to find a great swimsuit for use while you are expecting. There are a few different styles for future moms to choose from including tankinis, one piece swimsuits and two piece suits as well.
Maternity Swimwear
Maternity swimwear comes in a variety of styles to satisfy just about any pregnant woman interested in swimming either regularly for exercise, for occasional recreation , or for just spending a relaxing day at the beach or by the pool. In addition to maternity swimsuits, you can also find a number of accessories to round out your pregnancy swimwear ensemble. For example, you may also want to pick up a nice cover up or two for before and after swimming. You can round out your pool or beach outfits with a pair of flip flops or a big floppy hat for shade. Below are some examples of swimsuits for pregnant women along with some additional items for lounging by the water.

Maternity Halter Swimsuit
In terms of swimsuits, many women opt for either a tankini top and bikini bottom combination or a one piece bathing suit. Both styles offer comfort and support. The halter style swimsuit pictured on the right features straps that tie behind the neck and is machine washable. Swimwear for pregnant women can cost a little or a lot, but the suit in the picture sells for around $25 at Old Navy which probably will not bust your budget.
If you browse the Old Navy website, you can find a decent selection of additional swimwear as well. They sell tankini tops in a variety of colors or patterns and you can mix and match them with swim bottoms which are sold separately.
They also have a number of cover ups to choose from as well. The cover ups they sell are one hundred percent cotton dresses rather than the wrap style. Their swim cover ups look stylish enough to wear even when you are not at the beach.
Buying Maternity Swimwear
Before you head off shopping for a maternity swimsuit, ask yourself if you really need one. If you are not going to be swimming beyond your first trimester or very often you may be able to wear your existing bathing suits or get away with simply buying a slightly larger size. With maternity clothes, it is very easy to get swept up in the excitement and overspend so try not to go overboard. If you are sure you want maternity swimwear and will get good use out of it, it is very possible with a little effort to find a comfortable swimsuit at a reasonable price.
